Kamala Harris, the first female, first Black, and first Asian American vice president of the United States, has a long and distinguished career in politics. Before she became vice president, she served as a prosecutor, district attorney, and United States senator. She also ran for president in the 2020 Democratic primary.

Harris was born in Oakland, California, to Jamaican and Indian parents. She graduated from Howard University and the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. After working as a prosecutor in Alameda County, California, she was elected as district attorney of San Francisco in 2003. She served in that role until 2011, when she was elected as California's attorney general.

In 2016, Harris was elected to the United States Senate. She was the second African American woman to serve in the Senate, after Carol Moseley Braun. In 2019, she announced her candidacy for president of the United States. She withdrew from the race in December 2019.

In 2020, Harris was chosen as Joe Biden's running mate in the presidential election. They defeated incumbent President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence. Harris was sworn in as vice president on January 20, 2021.
